The Kerala government’s Devaswom Minister Kadakampally Surendra has stated that it would not interfere if the Sabarimala Devaswom board decided to file a review petition in the Supreme Court. “The government won’t interfere in the stance of Devaswom board. The government will welcome the review petition given by anyone”, said the minister, Mathrubhumi reported.

The review petition, if filed, would challenge the 28 September Supreme Court verdict that allowed women of all ages to enter the Sabarimala temple.

The state government, run by the Communist Party of India, had earlier ruled out any possibility of filing a review petition against the verdict. However, the recent protests carried by both men and women devotees to respect the sanctity of the deity seems to be forcing a rethink.

Earlier the Devaswom Minister had lashed out at two woman activists for trying to enter the temple. He had said that Sabarimala is not a place to prove the power of one’s activism and that the government is not responsible for providing them security.
