23 fake universities which are operating in violation of the UGC Act have been identified by the University Grants Commission (UGC) in a list publicly released by the statutory body, reports The Hindu.

Of these 23, 14 of them are believed to have been running their operations despite being previously also appearing in the ‘fake universities list’ published in 2005-2006. The UGC seems to have been unable to shut them down even after pursuing legal action through its Anti-Malpractice Cell (AMPC).

The offending universities which have found their names in the new list, and were also present in the previous one, include Vocational University, ADR-Centric Juridical University, United Nations University, Maharana Pratap Shiksha Niketan Vishwavidyalaya, Mahila Gram Vidyapith, Gandhi Hindi Vidyapeeth, and others.

Some of these universities, such as the Vishwakarma Open University for Self-Employment which has appeared on the list for the first time, even publicly claim to have UGC recognition.

The public list published by the UGC is also an attempt to warn students over falling for the false claims of these fake universities as any degrees/diplomas provided by them will not have official recognition.
