University Grants Commission (UGC) has approved the 'Scheme for Trans-disciplinary Research for India's Developing Economy' (STRIDE) to boost research culture in the country, India Today reports.

STRIDE will provide support to research projects that are socially relevant, locally need-based, nationally important and globally significant. It will also aid research capacity building with basic, applied and transformational action research which can contribute to the national interest.

Union HRD Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank said that the scheme would encourage research culture and innovation in educational institutions and help students, faculty to contribute towards the economy with collaborative research.

STRIDE aims to identify young talent, strengthen research culture, promote innovation and support trans-disciplinary research. It will also fund multi-institutional network high-impact research projects in humanities and human sciences.

The STRIDE has three components under which research projects would receive grants between Rs 50 lakh to Rs 5 crore. To encourage top quality impact research in humanities, UGC has a provision to identify experts and invite them to develop proposals. The UGC has also proposed to render a grant of Rs 2 lakh for the same.
