Prime Minister Narendra Modi (PIB/PMO)
India added a record 40.7 million new liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) connections in the current 2018-19 fiscal year (FY19), a jump of over 45 per cent from FY18, reports Business Standard (BS).
As per the target set by India’s three oil petroleum marketing companies - Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (HPCL) — 42.5 million new LPG customers will be added by 31 March 2019.
It should be noted that the government has already surpassed its new LPG connection for the current financial year. Against the target of 2 crore new connections, 2.67 connections have already been added as of 28 January 2019.
This strong performance can be attributed to persistent efforts of the current NDA government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to provide energy access to all households in the country.
Over 6.23 Crore New Connections
The Government launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) on 1 May 2016 to provide free LPG gas connections to the poor. As on 28 January, oil marketing companies (OMCs) have released more than 6.23 crore LPG connections under the Scheme across the country.
