The central government has put forth a proposal for tech giant Apple to bring about annual production output amounting to $50 billion in the coming five-six years as a part of the country’s ‘Make in India’ program.
The plan includes the projection for Apple to augment the products that the company produces locally in India by bringing the likes of air pods, watches, iPads and Macbooks under its ambit.
“The meeting with the Apple officials happened recently, where senior members of the government – including a top minister – were present,” a source in the know of the developments was quoted in a report by The Economic Times.
Apple has been asked to evolve India into a global sourcing base so that completely built products can be exported from here to across the world.
The company’s products are being manufactured in India through the likes of Wistron and Foxconn though the sheer volumes of the same are only marginal in comparison to what they produce in China.
The source quoted by the aforementioned publication mentioned that a suitable environment has been conducted for encouraging companies to invest, grow and manufacture in India through sweeteners that include the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme and capital subsidy plans.
