In a big push to solve water scarcity and access issues in the drought-prone regions of Madhya Pradesh and Uttar Pradesh, the two States are set to sign an agreement to implement the Ken-Betwa river interlinking project today (22 March), reports Indian Express.

Announcing the development via a statement yesterday, the Union Ministry of Jal Shakti said that the Chief Ministers (CMs) of the two States will be signing the agreement in the presence of Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Jal Shakti Gajendra Singh Shekhawat.

The statement also stated that the agreement will be signed through video conferencing and mark the first project of the National Perspective Plan for the interlinking of rivers.

It also emphasised that the agreement will herald the beginning of inter-state cooperation to implement the vision of former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee to carry water from areas that have surplus water to drought-prone and water deficit areas through the interlinking of rivers.

The project, once completed, will link the two rivers and enable the transfer flow of water from Ken to the Betwa river.
