The government of Uttar Pradesh has transferred Rs 1,000 each to 23 lakh labourers in the state as sustenance allowance amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

The scheme, which involves financial assistance through direct bank transfer to daily wage workers, is being run by the Pradesh Bhawan Evam Anya Sannirman Karmkar Kalyan Board. Rs 230 crore have been released in this trench.

The scheme was launched by Chief Minister Adityanath on Wednesday (10 June). In a virtual ceremony, Adityanath distributed ₹1000 each to five labourers.

Aimed at supporting daily wage workers amid coronavirus-linked lockdowns in the state, the financial assistance scheme was recommended by a three-member committee headed by finance minister Suresh Khanna.

The government will also provide 20 kg wheat and 15 kg rice to 1,65,31,000 labourers, hawkers, vendors and others in the unorganised sector.

Earlier, the state government had launched two insurance schemes for laborers and other daily wage workers in the state. While one gives a cover of Rs 2 lakh to all laborers in the state for accidental death or disability, the other is a health insurance cover of Rs 5 lakh.
