UPSC Announces An Increase Of 100 Vacancies In Civil Services Thanks To EWS Quota; Total 180 IAS Posts In Offing

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) announced that there are more than 100 vacancies on offer in 2019 as compared to last year. This reportedly come post the implementation of Narendra Modi government’s Economically Weaker Section (EWS) quota.
2014 saw 1,291 vacancies, and for the first time since then, this year’s notification registered a year-on-year increase in posts. The examination recruits India’s prestigious civil services, including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), the Indian Foreign Service (IFS), and the Indian Police Service (IPS).
In 2019, 896 civil servants will be picked up from the exam. The number of IAS officers recruited through the UPSC in the last few years has averaged 180, as reported by The Print.
“Reservations will be made for candidates belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, the Economically Weaker Sections (EWS) and Persons with Benchmark Disability in respect of vacancies as may be fixed by the government,” said the notification.
The quota refers to the poor among the general category and is applicable those living in houses under 1,000 square feet, a combined annual income of less than Rs 8 lakh, own land not exceeding 100 yards in municipal areas, and 200 yards in non-municipal areas and who hold agricultural land less than five acres.
