The United States (US)’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has authorised a booster shot of mRNA COVID-19 vaccines from Pfizer and Modern for people who have compromised immune systems, reports Economic Times.

This comes as Germany and Israel have also either approved or are planning to approve the third booster shot as the Delta variant of the coronavirus continues to spread worldwide.

It should be noted that Pfizer has said that the efficacy of the vaccine it developed with BioNTech drops over time, citing a study that showed 84 per cent effectiveness from a peak of 96 per cent four months after a second dose.

Meanwhile, Moderna has also said it sees the eventual need for booster doses, especially since the Delta variant has caused ‘breakthrough’ infections in fully vaccinated people.

It should be noted that the World Health Organization (WHO) had last week called for a moratorium on COVID-19 vaccine booster shots until at least the end of September.
