The Sikh community in San Antonio, Texas, has offered meals free of cost to government employees in the United States who are affected by the shutdown in the country. Many have been left without pay due to this. The partial shutdown has entered the fourth week and more than 800,000 employees have been affected due to this.

To prevent the flow of illegal immigrants into the US, President Donald Trump has been seeking a funding of USD 5.7 billion to construct a wall across the US-Mexico border. Opposition parties allege that it is a waste of taxpayer money.

Beginning 11 January, all the federal employees have been offered vegetarian meals for three days.

The New Indian Express quoted the President of the Sikh Centre of San Antonio, Balwinder Dhillon, as saying, “Workers and families affected by the shutdown are invited to Sikh Centre all weekend for free meals starting today. Sikh community is there to support the federal employees who did not receive their paychecks. Also, the Sikh community appreciates their services and believes in showing gratitude to those men and women who serve the nation. The least we could do is support them with a hot meal for the next three days.”
