U.S. Legislators Seek To Brand Pakistan As A ‘Terrorist State’

A bill that brands Pakistan as a “terrorist state” has been introduced in the U.S. House of Representatives by two powerful legislators, Ted Poe and Dana Rohrabacher.
A move that has the potential to make a huge difference, the Pakistan State Sponsor of Terrorism Designation Act (HR 6069) designates Pakistan a state sponsor of terrorism- indirectly emphasising the role Islamabad has played in fortifying the enemies of the U.S.
Ted Poe, Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Terrorism, said: “It is time we stopped paying Pakistan for its betrayal and designate it for what it is: a state sponsor of terrorism”. He also said that it will be up to the Obama administration to make the final decision on the execution of the Bill.
In a statement of support for India following the Uri terrorist attack, Congressman Pete Olson said: “I strongly condemn this terrorist attack on an Indian army base in Kashmir that resulted in the death of 18 Indian soldiers. India is a strong partner and ally in peace.”
It is, thus, apparent that the United States has no more patience with the acts of terrorism supported by Pakistan. It is a shame such a move had not originated in India first.
If Hillary Clinton wins the election, it would be harder for India to convince her to take the more aggressive approach. Donald Trump, on the other hand, would definitely back a more defensive approach towards dealing with Pakistan and that works fully in India’s interests.
Nevertheless, while this is a strategic move on the part of the U.S., India needs to continue developing nerves of steel in its fight against Pakistan.
