Uttar Pradesh, Kerala Top In Number Of Homosexuality Cases Filed Under Section 377

Uttar Pradesh (UP), and Kerala are on top of the list which details the number of cases registered under Section 377, which was recently struck down by the Supreme Court of India. A whopping 4,690 cases have been filed under the provision between 2014-16.
As per data procured from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) website, 2,195 gay sex cases were filed under Section 377 in 2016. In 2014, as many as 1,148 cases and 1,347 cases in 2015 were registered. In 2016, Uttar Pradesh (UP) topped the list with nearly 1,000 cases.
In 2015, among the 1,347 cases registered under Section 377, in more than 800 cases, the victims were children.
Among these 814 cases, 179 were in UP, 142 in Kerala, 116 in Maharashtra and 63 in Haryana, reported The New Indian Express. According to the Ministry of Home Affairs, those facing charges against consensual gay sex can find relief as the new verdict has given them hope.
A five-judge Bench, led by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra had unanimously stood for the LGBTQIA+ community, and stated that they possess the same rights as the other citizens of India.
