Madan Kaushik, a minister from the Trivendra Singh Rawat government, has been appointed as new chief of Uttarakhand BJP.

Kaushik replaced Banshidhar Bhagat who was heading the party in the hilly state since January 2020. Bhagat is now likely to be appointed a minister in the new Tirath Singh Rawat led BJP government in Uttarakhand.

In a statement issued by the Bharatiya Janata Party, it said that its national president J P Nadda has appointed Kaushik to the state unit chief's post with immediate effect.

Kaushik met Nadda and BJP Uttarakhand in-charge Dushyant Gautam in Delhi on Thursday (11 March).

He was a Cabinet minister under former chief minister Trivendra Singh Rawat who stepped down from his post earlier this week and has been replaced by Tirath Singh Rawat.

He had said several issues related to organisation and government were discussed in the meeting.

Kaushik is four time MLA from Haridwar assembly constituency. He has also served as Minister in Bhuvan Singh Khanduri and Ramesh Pokhriyal 'Nishank' government in the Uttarakhand government.

He was first elected to the Legislative Assembly in 2002 and subsequently in 2007, 2012 and 2017.
