Vacancies For Government Sweeper In TN: 14; Applicants: 4,000; Those ‘Vying’ For The Job: Engineers And MBAs

Talking of the ‘obsession’ with Engineering and MBA degrees, here’s news that might just change your academic plans: In Tamil Nadu, around 4,000 people, many of whom are Engineering and MBA degree holders, have applied for 14 positions of sweeper and sanitary worker at the state Assembly secretariat in Chennai, reports Hindustan Times.
The jobs’ pay is fixed in the range of Rs 15,700 to Rs 50,000. The vacancies follow the conventional quota break-up such that four are open to general category, four are to be filled by OBC candidates, three by Most Backward Classes (MBC) and De-Notified Tribes, two for Scheduled Castes and one for Scheduled Tribes.
The jobs do not prescribe an education qualification, although physical fitness is a mandatory criterion. Nonetheless, many candidates with degrees such as M.Tech, BE, M.Com and MBA, among other disciplines, are applicants.
This is not the first time such an unusual situation is being witnessed. In Uttar Pradesh, 62 posts of peon had once seen 93,000 applicants, among them even Ph.D holders. Similarly, 13 vacancies for waiter at the Mantralaya canteen in Mumbai saw as many as 7,000 overqualified candidates as applicants.
