Vaccine Crunch In Delhi Drives Residents To Meerut, Many Turned Away For Lack Of Documents To Prove They Live In UP

Meerut's District immunisation officer Praveen Gautam has claimed that people living in Delhi and Haryana have been booking slots for their second dose of the vaccine against the coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in Meerut.
He has been quoted as saying: "Around 70 per cent slots of Covaxin's second dose for the 18-44 age group have been booked by people from Delhi (sic)." He has reportedly added that they are being discouraged.
Sections of the media have cited "Covaxin crunch" as the reason for this move from people.
Reportedly, people were able to book their slots in the beginning of the third phase of the immunisation drive, but the said shortage of vaccine has come as a hurdle to the drive. Delhi has suspended the immunisation drive for the target group of people aged 18-44, citing vaccine shortage.
This report says: "According to officials, beneficiaries created ruckus at vaccination centres where they were turned away as they did not have Aadhar cards or other registered documents to prove they were residents of Uttar Pradesh, as per state guidelines."
The High Court has pulled up the Delhi government on the matter relating to ensuring the availability of vaccine doses. "You opened so many vaccination centres everywhere with so much pomp and splendour and now you say you don't know when the second dose stock would be available," the Court had reportedly said.
