Samajwadi Party supremo Akhilesh Yadav targeted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday (10 July) when he said that “innocent“ men are being killed in encounters in Uttar Pradesh.

"Kya nirdosh aadmi ko marna, custodial death ho jana, ye kanoon vyavasta kahenge aap (is killing an innocent man in custody a sign of proper law and order)", Yadav said on a live television interview on Aaj Tak while speaking on the encounter of Vikas Dubey in the morning.

When the news anchor asked if Yadav was insinuating that Dubey was innocent, Yadav asked in turn if the National Human Rights Commission had not issued the maximum notices to the current UP government on custodial deaths.

Watch his statement at 14:00 minutes:

He also alleged that Uttar Pradesh tops the chart when it comes to custodial deaths.

Incidentally, Yadav's statement comes a day after Dubey's mother had said to media reporters that the slain gangster was a member of the Samajwadi Party (SP).

Yadav denied these claims and insinuated that it was the BJP that made her give that statement.

When asked about the connections of Dubey’s wife with SP, Yadav said that he was all for a probe in the case.

Vikas Dubey died today morning following a police encounter. When Dubey's convoy reached Barra police circle in Kanpur, the vehicle in which he was seated, overturned after skidding on the road due to heavy rains.

Vikas, along with two other police personnel in the vehicle, were injured in the mishap.

As soon as Vikas was taken out of the vehicle, he snatched a rifle from the STF team and tried to fire at the police. He was injured in the retaliatory firing.

He was taken to a hospital but was declared dead.

He was accused of a slew of crimes including the recent killing of eight Uttar Pradesh cops in Kanpur. He has been active in the crime world since 1990s.
