In a remarkable development, several villages in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K)'s Shopian district have been provided with electricity connectivity after more than seven decades of independence, reports DNA India.

Residents of the remote villages of Dunnadi in Shopian's Keller tehsil have received electricity connections under Pradhan Mantri Sahaj Bijli Har Gar Yojana which had been launched as a flagship programme of the Government in 2017.

The said villages have been electrified by installation and commission of five transformers in a span of just a week by fast-tracking the electrification process. Apart from this, to make the development possible, authorities have installed 35-40 poles of 11 KV along with the transformers on a fast track basis. The area now has two electric cobbles.

Earlier these villages used to depend on sources like candles and oil lamps.

There still remain some far-flung regions of Kashmir Valley which continue to be devoid of electricity ever since Independence. Efforts are in progress to light up these parts of the Valley as well.
