“Humility always helps, be it in victory of defeat,” tweeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday (17 March). A wonderful lesson for anyone indeed – and one that his party member, Manoj Tiwari, perhaps needs the most right now.

The member of Parliament representing Northeast Delhi was recently in attendance at a school in the capital city. There was an event organised to mark the installation of new CCTV cameras in the area. A teacher, who was sharing the dias with him, reportedly asked the singer if he would sing a song. At hearing the request, Tiwari cracked down on the teacher, as can be seen in a video that went viral, saying, “You’re asking a member of Parliament to sing a song? Is this your manners?”

Immediately after this unpleasant display of arrogance, he ordered the teacher to get off the stage and sit down, asking someone to investigate the matter.

The Prime Minister has been urging the members of his party, rightly, to stay grounded even after the dominating performance in Uttar Pradesh. He said post-election, “Today that we have won the elections and fruits have grown on our tree, it is our duty to bow down just like a tree does. It is our opportunity to serve the people.”

Members like Tiwari, who is after all the President of the BJP in Delhi, would do well to heed the leader’s advice, or await a fall sooner than they can expect.
