A video of the BrahMos missile test-fired on 30 September has been released.
Amid tensions with China in Ladakh, an extended range version of India’s supersonic cruise missile was test-fired late last month.
The new version of the missile was equipped with an indigenous booster. The missile’s extended-range version has a range of over 400 kilometer.
India decided to extend the range of the missile when it became a member of the Missile Technology Control Regime.
Currently, work is on to extend the range of the missile even further.
The version already inducted by the armed forces, including the Indian Navy, has a range of around 290-300 kilometers.
The test-launch of the new version came at a time when India and China are locked in the most serious standoff in over four decades.
An air-launched version of the missile has been developed for the Indian Air Force (IAF). This version can be fired from a modified Su-30 MKI.
The IAF has deployed a squadron (No. 222 Squadron ‘The Tiger Sharks’) of its modified Su-30 MKIs in Thanjavur, Tamil Nadu.
BrahMos missiles have also been deployed in Ladakh and Arunachal Pradesh to counter Chinese threats along the Line of Actual Control.
