Uttar Pradesh (UP) Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath at a function in Baghpat, asked farmers to refrain from growing the water-intensive sugarcane and opt for other crops suitable for the Western UP environment instead.
This is a notable development as several states continue to appease farmers growing sugarcane despite the natural conditions unsuitable for the crop. Sugarcane cultivation has led to several regions becoming water deficient in recent years as farmers continue the unsustainable practice.
Yogi Adityanath addressing the rally:
In his speech Yogi urged the farmers to grow vegetables for the Delhi markets instead, which he claimed can potentially help the cultivators reap huge profits.
