As social media usage increases in India, statistics have emerged of the most popular online platforms among Indians. Lokniti-CSDS survey found that number of voters using social media have increased leaps and bounds in recent years, reports India Today.

While WhatsApp topped the chart with around 34 per cent voters using it, Facebook was close-second at 32 per cent. Both the platforms grew by over four and over three times respectively in the number of users in the past five years. Data also showed that most users of Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube were also using WhatsApp.

YouTube continues to be a popular video-sharing platform with over 31 per cent respondents using it.

The social networking and micro-blogging service, Twitter, launched in 2006, continues to be the least popular of all the platforms included in the survey, with only 12 per cent using it. Twitter was left behind by a relatively new platform, Instagram, acquired by Facebook in 2012, which attracts 15 per cent of the voters.

The survey also threw light on some interesting findings, including the fact that over 50 per cent respondents didn’t use social media to share their political views.
