Why Curfew Only A Few? Women in Delhi University Protest Against Regulations

Pinjra Tod, a women’s collective began an all-night protest at Delhi University’s Arts faculty, demanding curfew-less nights for women’s hostel. This is in retaliation to their charter of 18 demands not being met, a charter that was submitted to the Vice Chancellor last week.

Around 100 students staged a sit-in outside the Arts Faculty on Monday evening with placards, while some of them even attempted to scale the gates which were thwarted by the security. After that, they tried to block the Mall Road nearby for some time by jumping in front of oncoming vehicles.

To assuage the agitators, the police intervened and arranged a meeting between the Proctor, Deputy Proctor and Pro Vice-Chancellor of the University and the group. But due to that meeting awry, the protestors decided to do an all-night agitation as reported by Indian Express.

The collective’s demands include a new women’s hostel for differently-abled students, the setting up of an internal complaint committee against sexual harassment in all colleges and institutions, 24-hour entry into women’s hostels, abolishing the concept of local guardians for students keeping a provision for an emergency local contact and better water facilities.
