Indian boxer Amit Panghal on Sunday (22 September) finished his world championship run with a silver medal losing against Olympic champion Shakhobidin Zoirov of Uzbekistan in the final of 52 Kg category in Ekaterinburg, The Hindu reported.

Panghal, who put up a tough fight against Zoirov, could not turn his performance into points and lost by 0-5. He, however, became the first Indian boxer to have finished second in the world championship.

This was also India’s best performance so far in the international event as for the first time it bagged two medals. Earlier, Manish Kaushik had managed to get bronze in 63 kg category.

Panghal’s strong form continued in the finals as well, but he could not get past a taller and more muscular opponent. However, the silver at the world event is another feather in his cap after winning gold medals at The Asian Games and Asian Championships.

The 23-year-old came into national limelight after he secured bronze at the 2017 Asian Championships.

Previously, Vijender Singh (2009), Vikas Krishan (2011), Shiva Thapa (2015), and Gaurav Bidhuri (2017) have won medals for India at the world championship.
