With Eco-Friendly And Sustainable Alternatives, Delhi’s IGI Becomes India’s First Single-Use Plastic Free Airport

Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport, which is operated by GMR-led Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), on Monday (17 February) announced that it has become the nation's first ever single-use plastic free airport, reports Livemint.
IGI Airport received the certification for the feat from the Confederation of Indian Industry-ITC Centre of Excellence for Sustainable Development (CII-ITC CESD) which supports business community toward achieving sustainability.
"Our objective to make Delhi Airport free from single-use plastic is in line with the Prime Minister's vision to abolish all single-use plastic from India by 2022. DIAL is committed to preserve the environment and do its bit," said DIAL Chief Executive Officer Videh Kumar Jaipuriar.
The road towards achievement of the feat had begun back in September 2018 when the airport had become the first in India to make the commitment to free itself of single-use plastic. Thereafter, by encouraging the usage of eco-friendly and sustainable alternatives, the airport significantly brought down the generation of plastic waste.
The IGI airport is the biggest handler of passengers as well as cargo in the nation with the annual traffic handled by it soaring to 68.5 million passengers per annum in 2019.
