With the highest single-day spike of 55,078 new cases in the last 24 hours, the Covid-19 tally in India has surged to 1,638,870, the Union Health Ministry data revealed on Friday (31 July).
According to the Health Ministry, of the total, 5,45,318 are active cases while at least 1,057,805 people have been cured of the disease.
The number of Covid-19 deaths in the country has increased from previous day's 34,968 to 35,747, an increase of 779 in the last 24 hours.
Maharashtra remained the worst-hit state and reported 11,147 new infections, taking its tally to 4,11,798 including 14,729 fatalities, followed by Tamil Nadu (2,39,978), Delhi (1,34,403) and Karnataka (1,18,632).
States with most casualties after Maharashtra are Delhi (3,936), Tamil Nadu (3,838), Gujarat (2,418), Karnataka (2,230), Uttar Pradesh (1,587), West Bengal (1,536), Andhra Pradesh (1,281) and Madhya Pradesh (857).
The national capital recorded a single-day spike of 1,093 cases taking the tally beyond 1.34 lakh cases of which 10,743 were active cases as 3,936 people died and 1,19,724 were cured and discharged.
