Women will enter the famous Haji Ali dargah in Mumbai after their entry was banned by conservative Muslim clergy five years ago. A group of about 80 women will enter the shrine of the Sufi preacher around 3pm today (29 November).
Until June 2012, women were allowed entry up to the sanctum sanctorum comprising the grave of Sayyed Peer Haji Ali Shah Bukhari, but conservative clergymen objected to the presence of woman inside the shrine, and stopped it.
The ban was challenged and Bombay High Court as well as the Supreme Court declared it illegal. But from now, women and men will have separate entries to the shrine and nobody will be allowed to touch the tomb.

Introducing ElectionsHQ + 50 Ground Reports Project
The 2024 elections might seem easy to guess, but there are some important questions that shouldn't be missed.
Do freebies still sway voters? Do people prioritise infrastructure when voting? How will Punjab vote?
The answers to these questions provide great insights into where we, as a country, are headed in the years to come.
Swarajya is starting a project with an aim to do 50 solid ground stories and a smart commentary service on WhatsApp, a one-of-a-kind. We'd love your support during this election season.
