Army Chief General Rawat, on Friday (30 November), said that the Indian Army is not yet ready to send women for frontline combat duties, but their role will expand in areas like psychological warfare, information and non-combat, as reported by Indian Express.
“Women are being inducted in all the three services, and it is not new. We have deliberated on whether women can be given permanent commission. Along with the other two forces, Army has identified some areas where we can see more women officers being inducted, ”quoted Rawat.
He added that women already occupy positions in army’s education and law department, and said that women would also be hired as language interpreters.
Rawat said that in spite of women presence in fields, the army is still ‘not yet ready’ to send them in frontline combat. He said that facilities need to be created for the same and women to have to be prepared for the hardships.
He reportedly also claimed that many armymen come from villages where the expected intermingling of men and women with regards to co-working is yet to happen.
