Yellow Alert Flagged By IMD As Cyclone Pabuk Approaches Andaman And Nicobar Islands

On Saturday, January 5, yellow alert has been declared by the India Meteorological Department as Cyclone Pabuk is making its way towards the archipelago. Heavy rainfall is expected and isolated places will receive extreme rainfall beginning evening. All the residents have been advised to remain indoors until Sunday evening.

Sea conditions will be rough in the adjoining areas of the Bay of Bengal and fishing operations are advised to be suspended until January 7, Monday around the east-central region and January 8 around the south-east region of the Bay of Bengal.

The Indian Express quoted an IMD bulletin as saying, “(Pabuk) is very likely to move west-northwestwards and emerge into Andaman Sea around the forenoon of 05th January 2019. Thereafter it is very likely to move northwestwards and cross Andaman Islands around evening/night of 06th January.”

Furthermore, it added, “Rainfall at many places with heavy falls at isolated places likely to commence over Andaman Islands from 5th January evening. Intensity is very likely to increase with rainfall at most places and heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places on 6th and at isolated places on 7th.”

The cyclone has originated from the Gulf of Thailand and has reportedly killed a fisherman till now.
