Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has made Yoga compulsory in all schools across the state. This announcement comes days after he proposed the move along with making self-defence lessons mandatory for all girl students in the state.

The Rani Laxmibai Aatmaraskha Kaaryakram (self-defence programme) and the Yog Shiksha Kaaryakram (yoga education programme) would be made mandatory for all schools across the state.

The move comes as a part of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party government’s efforts to popularise yoga over the last few years.

Deputy Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh Dinesh Sharma, in a media interaction stated that Yoga was not part of any religion but a part of physical fitness.
