YouTube Music Kicks Off With A Bang: Hits 3 Million Downloads In India In Less Than A Week

Online music streaming platform YouTube Music hosted a music night with the Indian music fraternity in Mumbai on Monday (8 April) in celebration of hitting 3 million downloads in less than a week, reports Economic Times.

According to the report, the event witnessed performances from artists including Taufiq Qureshi, Akriti Kakkar, Alka Yagnik, Anirudh Ravichander, Badshah, Guru Randhawa and Harshdeep Kaur. Apart from the Indian artists, international music sensation Alan Walker also performed at the celebration.

"Our tremendous scale and reach is why many talented artists and creators across India come to YouTube to share their voice with the world," YouTube chief executive officer (CEO) Susan Wojcicki was quoted in the report as saying.

"It's why we're seeing Indian artists connect with fans from Delhi to New York and everywhere in between," she said.

Wojcicki said that by the year 2020, around 500 million users in India are expected to consume online video for entertainment, sharing and learning.

"We are incredibly excited to partner with Indian artists and labels to grow faster and go further," said Lyor Cohen, YouTube’s global head of music.

Earlier, In March, YouTube had launched its music streaming app, YouTube Music, and a paid video streaming subscription service, YouTube Premium.
