The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) registered a landslide victory in the Haryana municipal elections, winning nine out of 10 mayoral seats on Wednesday (12 March), reported The Hindu.

The party secured major wins in Gurugram, Faridabad, Panipat, Karnal, Hisar, and other key urban centers, while an independent candidate, Dr Inderjit Yadav, won in Manesar, denying BJP a clean sweep.

In Rohtak, considered a stronghold of the Hooda family, BJP’s Ram Avtar defeated Congress' Surjamal Kiloi by over 45,000 votes, marking a significant victory.

In Sonipat, BJP’s Rajiv Jain, husband of former state minister Kavita Jain, secured 57,858 votes, defeating Congress’ Kamal Diwan by 34,749 votes. The AAP’s Kamlesh Saini trailed behind even the NOTA votes.

In Hisar, another Congress-dominated constituency, BJP’s Praveen Popli secured a decisive victory against Congress’ Krishan Titu Singla by 64,456 votes.

The biggest victory came in Faridabad, where BJP’s Praveen Joshi trounced Congress’ Lata Rani by a staggering 3,16,852 votes. The AAP’s Nisha Dalal finished third with 29,977 votes.

In Manesar, the newly created municipal corporation, Independent candidate Dr. Inderjit Yadav defeated BJP’s Sunder Lal Sarpanch in a closely contested battle, winning by 2,000 votes.

In the Ambala mayoral by-election, BJP’s Sejla Sandeep Sachdeva won by over 20,000 votes, defeating Congress’ Ameesha Chawla.

BJP also secured victories in Panipat, where Komal Saini emerged victorious, and Yamunanagar, where Suman Bahmani clinched the mayor’s post.

The elections, held on 2 March, covered 41 municipal bodies, including by-polls in eight seats, with over 650 wards voting. BJP’s massive win cements its dominance in Haryana’s urban political landscape ahead of the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.
