News Brief
Murugan Bhakthargal Aanmeega Manadu, organised by Hindu Munnani, drew over 5 lakh devotees.
A criminal case has been registered against Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan, former Tamil Nadu BJP president K Annamalai, and several organisers linked to the Murugan Bhakthargal Aanmeega Manadu event held in Madurai on 22 June, following allegations of communal incitement and violations of court-imposed restrictions.
According to a Indian Express report, police in Madurai confirmed late Monday (30 June) that a case was filed at E3 Annanagar Police Station, based on a complaint by advocate S Vanjinathan of the Madurai People’s Federation for Communal Harmony.
He alleged that speeches and resolutions at the conference breached conditions set by the Madras High Court, which had permitted the religious gathering under strict limits on political and religious rhetoric.
The FIR invokes sections 196(1)(a), 299, 302, and 353(1)(b)(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Accused persons named include Kadeshwara Subramaniam and S Muthukumar of Hindu Munnani, as well as members of the RSS, BJP, Hindu Munnani, and allied Sangh Parivar groups.
The FIR further alleges that public remarks aimed to provoke disharmony “under the guise of spiritual assembly.”
Pawan Kalyan during the conference had declared, “Secularism has become a shield for some to denigrate Hindu gods,” adding, “I respect Christianity and Islam, but don’t disrespect Hindu Dharma.”
The event also passed resolutions urging Hindus to vote as a bloc and criticising the DMK government for “treating temples as revenue sources.”
