The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has attached a property linked to Bava Bahrudeen, an accused in the Tamil Nadu-based Hizb ut Tahrir (HuT) terror conspiracy case. The move, announced on 30 June 2025, comes under Section 25 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act, 1967.
The property, located at 58H Ashrath Awliya, Manshoor Thaikkal, Thanjavur, was reportedly used by HuT operatives since 2015 to carry out secret indoctrination and recruitment drives.
“They were conducting clandestine indoctrination and recruitment activities through secret classes and radicalisation sessions,” said the agency in a statement, adding that “Khilafah Exhibitions” glorifying the military strength of Islamic nations like Iran, Turkey, and Pakistan were also hosted there.
The plot, owned by the Hazarat Sams Manssor Peer Avuliya Dargah Trust Board, was transferred to Bahrudeen without formal registration. The NIA said the premises were central to HuT's efforts to “establish the Islamic Caliphate in India.”
Founded in 1953, Hizb ut Tahrir is a pan-Islamist outfit that advocates for the restoration of a global Islamic Caliphate and seeks to replace democratic governance with Sharia law.
Though banned in India, the group continues to operate covertly through online networks and informal gatherings.
Few days ago, in a significant development in the 2022 Coimbatore car bomb blast case, the NIA had also chargesheeted five more individuals for their involvement in the ISIS-inspired attack targeting the Arulmigu Kottai Sangameshwarar Thirukovil temple.
Their objective was to avenge the imprisonment of their leader, Mohammed Azharuddin, who had been arrested by NIA from Coimbatore in 2019 for promoting violent Salafi-Jihadi ideology.
The Coimbatore case now has 17 accused chargesheeted in connection with the conspiracy, which involved clandestine meetings, radicalisation sessions, and plotting violent attacks.
The agency confirmed that further investigation in both the cases is continuing.
