Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) is set to expand its transport network with the initiation of tenders for study reports for building two key metro corridors and feasibility studies for a Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS) and high-altitude transport systems like ropeways in popular tourist destinations.
CMRL has invited tenders to prepare DPRs for two new metro corridors—Light House to High Court via Secretariat and Tambaram to Guindy via Velachery, The Hindu reported citing officials.
The Light House-High Court corridor will cover approximately 7 km, featuring around 4-5 stations, connecting key locations such as Marina Beach, Thiruvallikeni, the High Court, and the Secretariat.
The Tambaram-Velachery-Guindy corridor, spanning 21 km, is expected to significantly improve connectivity in southern Chennai.
"The DPRs for this project are likely to be completed in another 3-4 months," an official was quoted as saying by The Hindu.
CMRL is also set to launch a feasibility study for the RRTS, which will assess the viability of high-speed rail corridors in three routes:
Chennai-Chengalpattu-Tindivanam-Villupuram
Coimbatore-Tirupur-Erode-Salem
The bids for the study have also been launched by the metro rail body.
"RRTS is a very cost-intensive project. Hence, we must see which corridors will need it and will have that kind of a patronage. We are looking at the feasibility of connecting Parandur in the Chennai-Kanchipuram-Vellore corridor," an official added.
The DFRs for these corridors will include ridership analysis and extensive surveys to determine their economic viability.
CMRL is also exploring high-altitude transport systems like ropeways in Mamallapuram, Ooty, and Kodaikanal.
The agency has issued an Expression of Interest (EoI) to consultants who will conduct detailed feasibility reports (DFRs) for these projects.
