Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) has proposed spending Rs 1,000 crore on building a 20-storey corporate tower, to be completed by April 2027.
The project was approved this week by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways, news agency PTI reported.
Strategically located over 3.16 acres at Mallet Bunder, Mumbai Port, the headquarters will provide office space to the important offices of the Directorate General of Shipping, Vadhvan Port, and India Ports Global, that deals with global port projects.
It will include a 2,000-capacity hall as well as a digital observatory on its summit.
Unmesh Sharad Wagh, chairman of JNPA, emphasised the port’s commitment to modernisation, stating that the new facility reflects JNPA’s dedication to "efficiency and seamless coordination."
To be developed with a floor space index (FSI) of 4.0, the building will have a built-up area of around nine lakh square feet, and Engineers India Ltd. has been engaged as consultants.
The state government of Maharashtra has evinced interest in taking space in the headquarters, and a formal proposal would be made in the near future.
Referring to JNPA's operational achievement, Wagh welcomed the port's first-ever handling of over 7 million TEUs.
With the commissioning of the second phase of the fourth container terminal, JNPA is set to become India's first port with a handling capacity above 10 million TEUs.
"At present JNPA is having 90 per cent of its capacity utilised and with 2.4 million TEUs we are going to become 10.1 million TUs. In the next financial year, only 0.3 million TEUs capacity is also available. So, we will become 10.4 million TUs and that will be our final capacity," Wagh stated.
Outside JNPA, Vadhvan Port in Palghar will become India's biggest deep-water port, with an investment of Rs 76,220 crore.
Built by Vadhavan Port Project Ltd., a special purpose vehicle (SPV) between Maharashtra Maritime Board and JNPA, the terminal will bring in another 10.4 million TEUs of capacity once JNPA hits its capacity by 2029-30.
