Deadline For Karnataka Caste Census Might Be Extended: Home Minister G Parameshwara

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara said on Monday (6 October) that the state’s ongoing caste census, launched on 22 September, may get a deadline extension to ensure full coverage.

“I don't know whether they might extend the process (deadline) for a few days to complete it. It has to be completed, there's no option for us,” he said.

The census, conducted by the Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes, has already enumerated about 80 per cent of the state’s population.

It aims to cover approximately 1.43 crore households at an estimated cost of Rs 420 crore. The original deadline is 7 October, but Parameshwara confirmed Chief Minister Siddaramaiah is reviewing progress, particularly in lagging districts.

Vijayendra added that with Prime Minister Narendra Modi already announcing caste enumeration in the national census, “there was no need to create such confusion in our state.” Union Minister of State V Somanna also criticised the process as “unscientific” and “filled with confusion and technical errors.”

Defending the exercise, Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said last week, “This survey is not against anyone; it is in favour of everyone,” stressing that it will ensure equitable representation for all seven crore residents.
