BJP MP Khagen Murmu (Maldah Uttar) and Siliguri MLA Shankar Ghosh, party chief whip in the West Bengal Assembly, suffered injuries after a mob allegedly attacked them at Nagrakata in Jalpaiguri. The leaders had visited the area to inspect flood damage, reported The Indian Express.
Murmu sustained critical injuries after attackers ransacked their vehicle. Ghosh said, “When we visited the area, suddenly some people came up to us and said they were Didi’s sainik and why are you here, we said we are Modi ji’s sainik.”
He added, “There is nothing left of the car, my entire body is covered in glass and Murmu is admitted in the hospital.”
According to Ghosh, the incident occurred around 1 pm. After exiting their car to survey the flood-hit site, the leaders were surrounded by about 500 people who began assaulting Murmu. Murmu’s security intervened, placing them back in the vehicle as the mob pelted stones, sticks, and shoes while chanting “Go away BJP.” The vehicle windows shattered during the attack.
The BJP accused the Trinamool Congress of orchestrating the assault. Leader of Opposition Suvendu Adhikari wrote on X, “Mamata Banerjee is on full panic mode… she has now pressed the panic button and has now unleashed her goons… to stop BJP MPs and MLAs from engaging in relief work… Mamata Banerjee, you can’t intimidate BJP.”
BJP MP Sukanta Majumdar said, “Failed Chief Minister Smt. Mamata Banerjee… has clearly shown how fearful she has become of the BJP West Bengal workers and leaders… Shame!”
TMC IT cell head Debangshu Bhattacharya responded, “There were no party flags. It was the outburst of the common man…”
Murmu and Ghosh were referred to a private hospital in Siliguri. The BJP plans a protest rally in Kolkata.
