Deendayal Port In Gujarat's Kandla To Get Rs 57,000 Crore Upgrade With New Smart Port, Mega Shipbuilding Marine Cluster

The Deendayal Port Authority (DPA) at Kandla in Gujarat is set to undergo a major capacity expansion with an estimated investment of Rs 57,000 crore, according to the details provided by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways in the Lok Sabha on Friday (21 March).

The expansion plan includes the development of a new Smart Port along a 6-kilometre waterfront to handle multipurpose and container cargo. This initiative aims to add 135 million metric tonnes per annum (MMTPA) in capacity at an estimated cost of Rs 27,000 crore.

"The capacity increase is being targeted at Kandla, Deendayal Port Authority with investment of Rs.57000 Cr. (Approx.)," Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal said in a written reply to a question in the Lok Sabha.

"A New Smart Port using of around 6 km waterfront has been planned to cater the trade requirements to handle Multipurpose & Container cargo at a capacity addition of 135 MMTPA (Approx.) for tentative cost of Rs.27,000 Cr," the minister said.


"In line with the Ministry’s vision, Deendayal Port with its extensive coastline & huge land parcel is planning to develop a Mega Shipbuilding Cluster, with project components that include Shipbuilding Yard, Marina, Fishing Harbour and Township at Kandla for tentative cost of Rs. 30,000 Cr," the minister said.

Further, the minister said that DPA will play a vital role in the International North – South Transport Corridor (INSTC) and India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC).
