The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) set up a committee on Monday (29 July) to investigate the deaths of three civil services aspirants inside a library housed in the basement of their coaching centre.

The ministry stated that the committee would submit its report within 30 days.

"MHA has constituted a committee to inquire into the unfortunate incident at a coaching centre in old Rajinder Nagar in New Delhi. The committee will inquire into the reasons, fix responsibility, suggest measures and recommend policy changes," the ministry said in a post on X.

The committee will comprise the additional secretary of Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, principal secretary (home) of the Delhi government, Special CP of Delhi Police, Fire Advisor, and joint secretary of MHA serving as the Convener.

Meanwhile, Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena announced a compensation of Rs 10 lakh each for the families of the three civil services aspirants who died in Old Rajinder Nagar.

Further, a Joint Task Force of MCD and DFS, constituted under the order of the Delhi High Court in the fire incident at a coaching centre at Mukherjee Nagar earlier this year, will also conduct a survey of all buildings in the Rajinder Nagar area.

The task force will seal off any basements and other illegal structures violating building bylaws, MPD 2021, and fire safety norms.

The Delhi Municipal Corporation also began a sealing drive in the coaching centre hubs of northwest Delhi's Mukherjee Nagar and Old Rajinder Nagar.

This action follows the deaths of three civil services aspirants two days ago when a library in the basement of their coaching centre, Rau’s IAS Study Circle, in Old Rajinder Nagar, was flooded after heavy rains, reportedly causing the failure of the single biometric entry and exit system.
