At least two people were killed and over 20 others injured after around 18 coaches of a train bound for Mumbai derailed in Jharkhand early this morning.
The Howrah-CSMT Express was derailed near Badabamboo, around 80 kilometers away from Jamshedpur.
The derailment occurred between Rajkharsawan and Badabamboo stations within the South Eastern Railway network at 3:45 am as the train was traveling from Howrah to Mumbai.
Rescue teams were immediately dispatched to the site following the derailment notification, and rescue and relief operations are ongoing.
Senior Railways official Om Prakash Charan said that a nearby goods train had also derailed, though it remains unclear if the two incidents happened simultaneously.
He said that out of the 18 derailed coaches, 16 were passenger coaches, one was a power car, and one was a pantry car.
Officials stated that the injured received first aid from the Railways' medical team and have since been sent to Chakradharpur for better treatment.
The cause of the derailment is currently under investigation, the officials said.
The derailment took place near pole number 219 on the Howrah-Mumbai railway line, close to Chakradharpur.
As a result of the accident, rail operations in the Tatanagar-Chakradharpur section of the South Eastern Railway have been entirely halted.
Many trains have been canceled as a result of the accident, while some are being rerouted to alternative paths.
