Delhi Embarks On Smart Redevelopment Of Mahatma Gandhi Road Corridor To Ease Traffic

The Delhi government has initiated a redevelopment of the Mahatma Gandhi Road Corridor.
The Public Works Department (PWD) has appointed AECOM India to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for six critical stretches of the 55 km corridor, which serves as one of Delhi’s most vital transport arteries, The New Indian Express reported.
In its first phase, AECOM will undertake extensive feasibility studies and traffic analyses to frame the DPR, featuring scientific designs, 3D visualisations, and phased implementation plans.
The project envisions the creation of elevated corridors, smoother intersections, and improved connectivity linking north, south, and central Delhi.
The corridor has been divided into six segments, including Azadpur Flyover–Hanuman Temple (ISBT), Chandigarh Akhara–Majnu Ka Tilla, Hanuman Temple (ISBT)–DND Flyover, DND Flyover–Moti Bagh Metro Station, Moti Bagh Metro–Rajouri Garden, and Rajouri Garden–Pacific Mall–Azadpur Flyover.
PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh described Mahatma Gandhi Road as “Delhi’s backbone,” adding, “Our mission is to make this corridor smarter, safer, and faster.”
He emphasised that the initiative reflects a commitment to sustainable and data-driven infrastructure. “We’re not just building roads; we’re building a smarter Delhi,” he said.
The DPR will include environmental and social impact assessments, geotechnical surveys, and real-time traffic simulations. With a 24 week preparation timeline, officials aim to ensure that once approved, work can begin swiftly.
