The Delhi government is reportedly planning to build a Rs 3,000-crore elevated road over the 20-km stretch of the Munak Canal, from Bawana to Inderlok, aimed at improving connectivity between North and Northwest Delhi, Indian Express reported.
The project also includes a proposal to take over the canal’s maintenance from the Haryana Irrigation Department.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta recently chaired a meeting with PWD Minister Parvesh Sahib Singh and officials from Haryana, NHAI, and other departments.
Gupta underlined the significance of maintaining the canal, saying it plays a vital role in Delhi’s water supply system.
“The canal flows openly through Delhi, and there is no effective mechanism in place to ensure the security of the canal or its water,” the CM’s Office stated.
In several parts of Delhi, the canal banks remain unpaved, which often leads to water contamination.
Additionally, the lining or pitching of the canal has deteriorated in many stretches due to prolonged neglect and lack of proper maintenance.
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta highlighted the canal’s social and cultural relevance, pointing out that it serves as a key site for large-scale Chhath Puja celebrations, underscoring its importance to the community.
She described the canal as a vital resource for Delhi that should be maintained with seriousness and responsibility.
Gupta added that she would soon discuss this matter with Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini.
Officials cited in the IE report said that the work on detailed project report (DPR) for the elevated road would be completed within three months.
The canal and its surrounding lands come under the jurisdiction of Haryana’s Irrigation Department, and the Delhi Government currently has no role in its management.
The officials added that PWD has sought a no-objection certificate (NOC) from Haryana.
The proposed infrastructure is expected to cut travel time by up to 40 per cent, easing traffic congestion and providing significant benefits to daily commuters from areas like Bawana, Narela, Rohini, and Inderlok.
Preliminary surveys and alignment planning for the proposed corridor have already begun.
