Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief Mohan Bhagwat’s recent comment that turning 75 is a signal to "make way for others” has sparked political speculation, especially with Prime Minister Narendra Modi set to turn 75 this September.

At a book launch in Nagpur, Bhagwat cited the example of RSS ideologue Moropant Pingle, who once joked that being felicitated with a shawl after 75 was society’s way of saying, “It’s time to step aside.”

Bhagwat added that even Pingle, despite his dedication, believed in moving on gracefully with age.

“When you turn 75, it means you should stop now and make way for others," Bhagwat was quoted as saying by Hindustan Times.

According to a report by The New Indian Express, the remark is being interpreted by many as a subtle message aimed at senior leaders in the party, including PM Modi.

The Opposition was quick to react. Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Sanjay Raut remarked, “Modi forced senior leaders like LK Advani, Jaswant Singh, and Murli Manohar Joshi into retirement post-75. Let’s see if he’ll hold himself to the same standard.”

Echoing the sentiment, Congress leader Abhishek Singhvi said, “It’s dangerous to preach what you don’t practice.

However, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, in May 2023, had dismissed any such age bar, asserting that the BJP’s constitution does not include a retirement clause at 75, and that PM Modi will lead till 2029.

However, Bhagwat’s statement has reignited debate over BJP’s internal leadership policies, especially in the run-up to the next general elections.
