In a swift high-seas operation, the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) rescued the US-flagged sailing yacht ‘Sea Angel’ stranded southeast of Indira Point in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on Friday (11 July).

On Thursday (10 July) at 11.57 am Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Port Blair received a distress alert from the 16x 8-metre vessel, which had two crew members aboard and was disabled in rough sea conditions with a damaged sail and entangled propeller, located 52 nautical miles southeast of Indira Point.

The ICG said the MRCC Port Blair promptly activated the International Safety Net (ISN), alerted nearby merchant ships, and launched rescue coordination protocols.

ICG Ship Rajveer was deployed at 2 pm to assist the distressed vessel.

By 5.30 pm, ICG Ship Rajveer reached Sea Angel, established communication with the crew, and conducted a situational assessment.

Despite facing adverse conditions and mechanical issues, both crew members were reported to be safe and in good health.

The Coast Guard said the yacht was taken under tow by 6.50 pm and safely escorted to Campbell Bay.

The vessel reached the harbour at 8 am on 11 July.

Officials emphasised the timely coordination between MRCC, ICG units, and maritime networks, calling it a textbook example of international maritime rescue collaboration.
