The newly inaugurated G D Naidu Flyover on Avinashi Road is set to transform Coimbatore’s urban mobility with its advanced engineering, sustainable design, and AI-powered traffic management system, Times of India reported.

Stretching 10.1 km from Uppilipalayam to Goldwins, it is among South India’s longest flyovers, connecting key industrial and residential zones while easing congestion toward the Coimbatore airport.

Constructed at a cost of Rs 1,791.23 crore, the project was executed by K N R Constructions under the Tamil Nadu Highways Department.

Approved in 2016-17 and sanctioned in 2020, it was completed after minor delays, incorporating new features to improve efficiency and sustainability.

The flyover features a four-lane main carriageway supported by a six-lane road at ground level, ensuring smooth segregation of local and through traffic.

Eight ramps, four for entry and four for exit, enable seamless vehicle movement without disrupting city roads.

The design is aimed at reducing travel time between the city and the airport to just 10 minutes, significantly improving daily commute efficiency.

A major highlight of the project is set to be the upcoming integration of AI-based cameras to monitor violations such as speeding and helmet or seatbelt non-compliance.

According to the Times of India report, the system will capture vehicle numbers of offenders and display them on digital screens, helping curb accidents caused by rash driving.

Environmentally, the structure incorporates rainwater harvesting systems across all spans to recharge groundwater and minimise urban flooding.

Drip and sprinkler irrigation maintain greenery along the corridor, while sinus plate expansion joints enhance structural durability and reduce maintenance costs.

Blending technology, sustainability, and connectivity, the G D Naidu Flyover is a landmark of Coimbatore’s urban transformation, a model for modern, eco-friendly infrastructure designed for safer and smarter commuting.
