IIT Delhi
The Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi (IIT-Delhi) has emerged as India's top-performing institution in the Engineering and Technology category, securing the 26th rank globally in the latest QS World University Rankings by Subject 2025, reported The Indian Express.
This marks a substantial improvement from its 45th rank last year, reinforcing its position as a global leader in technical education and research.
The Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) rankings, announced on Wednesday (12 March), analysed over 21,000 academic programmes from 1,700+ universities across 100 countries.
Institutions were assessed based on five key indicators: academic reputation, employer reputation, citations per paper, international research network, and H-index (which measures research productivity and impact).
Apart from IIT-Delhi, Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) also maintained its presence in the top 50 globally in the Development Studies category, though its rank dropped from 20th last year to 29th in 2025.
While Delhi-based institutions, including JNU and Delhi University (DU), demonstrated upward trends in broader subject categories, some specific disciplines saw a decline.
For instance, JNU’s rank in Sociology slipped from 91st in 2024 to 101-150 in 2025, despite its overall improvement in Arts and Humanities (from 244th in 2024 to 177th in 2025).
The university also showed progress in Social Sciences and Management, securing the 137th rank, up from 303rd last year.
IIT-Delhi has performed exceptionally well across various fields, securing top 100 global rankings in 12 specific subjects, including Computer Science & Information Systems, Data Science & AI, Business & Management Studies, Electrical Engineering, etc.
While DU demonstrated growth in Natural Sciences, JNU continues to lag behind, ranking 501-550 in 2025.
Since 2023, both JNU and DU have been improving steadily in the Arts and Humanities category, despite facing setbacks in previous years.
In 2022, JNU ranked 188th and DU 227th, but their rankings declined in 2023 to 256 and 271, respectively.
