Leh Curfew Relaxed for Four Hours; Security Forces on High Alert (X)
After cremating the four victims of the 24 September violence in Leh, authorities on Tuesday (30 September) announced a four-hour curfew relaxation in Leh district of Ladakh from 10 am to 2 pm, reported The New Indian Express.
During this period, all groceries, essential services, hardware, and vegetable shops opened, while schools and other educational institutions remain closed. Mobile internet services, suspended since the violence, will stay blocked.
“The situation is under control and no untoward incident has been reported after 24 September violence,” a police official was quoted as saying.
Security forces remain deployed in sensitive areas and are maintaining strict vigilance. Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta has been holding high-level security review meetings nearly every day.
The unrest erupted when the Leh Apex Body organised a protest for 6th Schedule and statehood for Ladakh on 24 September.
Security personnel opened fire, killing four and injuring about 80, including a critically injured girl airlifted to AIIMS, Delhi.
The bodies of the victims, including 47-year-old Kargil war veteran Tsewang Tharchin, have been cremated. Authorities imposed curfew, arrested Sonam Wangchuk and over 50 others, and booked Wangchuk under the NSA.
Gupta urged officials to “remain vigilant, responsive, and people-friendly” and said, “Peace is the cornerstone of development… The administration stands firmly with the people and will ensure their safety, dignity, and progress.”
