Mumbai Metro Line 7A Achieves Tunnel Breakthrough, 61 Per Cent Work Completed: Report

The Mumbai Metro Line 7A project reached a major milestone with the successful breakthrough of a 1.65-km tunnel connecting Andheri (East) to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), Times of India reported.
The breakthrough, achieved by the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) T-60 on 14 July 2025, marks a significant step toward the line’s targeted completion in 2026.
The tunnel work, executed by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), began on 1 September 2023, with the TBM starting operations on 4 November 2023.
The completed tunnel has a finished diameter of 5.6 meters and was constructed using 1,178 rings, each 1.4 meters long and made up of six segments. Its depth ranges from 12 to 28 meters.
Metro Line 7A spans a total of 3.4 km, with 2.5 km being underground. It will include two underground stations, Airport Colony and T2 Airport, and follow a mixed alignment of elevated and underground sections.
The project has now achieved 61 per cent overall completion.
Key engineering challenges addressed so far include tunnelling beneath the Sahar Elevated Road, constructing an overpass above Metro Line 3, diverting a major sewer line, and crossing an underground water pipeline.
Once operational, Metro Line 7A will integrate with Lines 2A, 3, 7, and 9, significantly improving connectivity across Mumbai and easing commuter travel.
