US President Donald Trump is under fire from his own supporters after defending his administration’s handling of the controversial review into the so-called Epstein files, a stance that has fuelled discord within the Make America Great Again (MAGA) movement.

According to NPR report, a recent Justice Department and FBI memo said there was no evidence disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein maintained a “client list” or engaged in blackmail, reiterating findings that he died by suicide in his prison cell in 2019.

However, this conclusion has done little to quiet conspiracy theories among Trump’s base, where suspicions persist about a hidden elite working against the former president.

Tensions have been growing inside Trump’s team, with Attorney General Pam Bondi, FBI Director Kash Patel, and Deputy Director Dan Bongino reportedly at odds over the fallout from the Epstein investigation.

Bondi, who previously claimed Epstein’s client list was “sitting on my desk right now to review,” distributed binders labelled “The Epstein Files: Phase 1” to right-wing influencers earlier this year, only for them to reveal heavily redacted documents already in the public domain.

Meanwhile, Patel and Bongino, both outspoken critics of the FBI, have faced threats from far-right supporters after publicly affirming Epstein’s death as a suicide.

Over the weekend, Trump took to Truth Social to defend Bondi and dismissed the uproar, telling followers to “not waste Time and Energy on Jeffrey Epstein, somebody that nobody cares about.”

Speaking to reporters, he added, “But I think the attorney general, the credibility is very important… And I think the attorney general’s handled it very well.”

Yet, for many in the MAGA movement, dropping the Epstein narrative runs counter to Trump’s long-standing pledges to expose a “deep state.”

Commentator and former Fox News host Tucker Carlson expressed frustration, stating, “The fact that the US government, the one that I voted for, refused to take my question seriously and instead said, ‘Case closed. Shut up, conspiracy theorist,’ was too much for me.”
