Maharashtra Cultural Affairs Minister Ashish Shelar has directed the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) to cancel the proposed Rs 300 crore Bollywood theme park planned beneath the Metro Line 2A corridor between Bandra West and Juhu, following strong opposition from citizens’ groups.

Shelar, who originally conceptualised the project, held a detailed review meeting with MMRDA officials before issuing the directive.

“After a detailed review meeting, it was decided to cancel the proposed Bollywood Theme project planned under Metro Line 2A from Bandra West to Juhu. I have issued directives to MMRDA officials to divert the allocated funds towards other priority development projects that will directly benefit citizens,” Shelar announced on X.

The minister, who also serves as the guardian minister for Mumbai Suburban District and represents Bandra West, had envisioned the theme park as a creative showcase of 110 years of Indian cinema, from Dadasaheb Phalke’s Raja Harishchandra (1913) to the modern film era.

However, the proposal faced mounting backlash from local residents and activists who criticised it as a wasteful expenditure.
